The stadium was inaugurated on May 29, 1966, at noon, with an official ceremony that included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and an opening match between Club América and Torino F.C.. In that moment, the Azteca didn’t just open its doors—it ushered in a new era for football in Mexico.

Estadio Azteca: Entering a new chapter with its third World Cup

The Azteca has never simply hosted matches—it has shaped football history. It was a key venue for the 1970 FIFA World Cup and the 1986 FIFA World Cup, both organized by FIFA, leaving an indelible mark on the global stage.

It witnessed two World Cup finals and some of the sport’s most legendary performances. In 1970, Pelé was crowned world champion, while in 1986, Diego Maradona delivered one of football’s most iconic chapters—moments that remain part of the game’s collective memory.

With its sights set on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the stadium is poised to become the first in history to host three different World Cups—further solidifying its symbolic weight in international football.

In preparation for 2026, the stadium has undergone a comprehensive transformation. The renovation focuses on modernizing every aspect of the venue while preserving its essence. Upgrades include redesigned hospitality areas, improved access points, updated locker rooms, advanced technology systems, and the integration of sustainable solutions.

While its capacity has gradually decreased—from over 100,000 spectators to approximately 87,000—comfort and safety have become central priorities.
