The story behind Veracruz’s Carnival legacy

The Carnival of Veracruz dates back to the 17th century, originally rooted in local dance gatherings. By the 19th century, it evolved into elegant masquerade balls celebrated in the city’s grand salons, later spilling into the streets.

The turning point came in 1925, when the celebration became official through the formation of the first Carnival Governing Committee, ushering in a new era of organized festivities—laying the foundation for the beloved, large-scale tradition that continues today.
