THE MONUMENTAL CLOCK AND ITS 12 APOSTLES

Construction of the temple began on August 15, 1897, and was completed 75 years later, in 1972. The lengthy process was largely due to its intricately carved cantera-stone façade, inspired by medieval architecture and featuring its famous monumental clock with mechanical figures of the 12 apostles.

At 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., the mechanism comes to life: a carillon of 25 bells begins to play as the figures of the 12 apostles emerge in procession. It has become one of the temple’s most beloved spectacles.

FRENCH STAINED GLASS AND EUROPEAN MOSAICS

Inside, the temple houses an extraordinary collection of French stained-glass windows depicting different biblical scenes. They were created in France by master glassmakers Jacques and Gérard Degusseau, as well as renowned artist Jacques Grüber, based on designs by Parisian painter Maurice Rocher.

Another remarkable feature is the collection of mosaics decorating the façade, crafted in workshops in Vatican City—an artistic detail that further enhances the character and grandeur of the building.

THE MONUMENTAL ORGAN WITH MORE THAN 3,000 PIPES

The Expiatory Temple also has an important musical legacy. Its interior houses a monumental organ with more than 3,000 pipes, brought from Germany and built by the Italian firm Claudio Anselmi Tamburini.

The impressive instrument underwent a lengthy process of harmonization and installation that began in 1988 and continued through the late 1990s, allowing it to accompany religious ceremonies with its distinctive sound.
