Xochitecatl: Discover the ancient circular pyramid near Mexico City

Today, Xochitecatl Archaeological Zone offers one of the most rewarding cultural escapes from the Mexican capital. The site is home to several remarkable structures, including the Pyramid of Flowers, the Pyramid of the Serpent, the Platform of the Volcanoes, and, most notably, the enigmatic Spiral Pyramid, whose circular design makes it one of the most distinctive archaeological monuments in the country.

The History of Xochitecatl

Dating from approximately 1000 to 400 B.C., Xochitécatl is one of the oldest known ceremonial centers in the Puebla–Tlaxcala Valley.

Its name is commonly translated as "Place of the Lineage of Flowers" or "Person of the Flowers." Associated with the Olmeca-Xicalanca culture, the settlement was never intended to function as an ordinary city. Instead, it served as an important ceremonial complex dedicated to fertility, motherhood, and the forces of nature.

Things to do at Xochitecatl Archaeological Zone

1. Climb the Pyramid of Flowers. The site's most iconic structure is the Pyramid of Flowers, the fourth-largest pyramid in Mesoamerica. At its summit lies the legendary "Gateway of Fertility." According to local tradition, women once climbed to this sacred point to pray for pregnancy and blessings of fertility, making it one of the site's most meaningful ceremonial spaces.

2. Explore the Spiral Pyramid. One of Xochitécatl's most remarkable features is the Spiral Pyramid, built upon a rare circular platform unlike any other in Mexico. Archaeologists believe it once served as both an astronomical observation point and an important ceremonial landmark. From its summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views across the Puebla–Tlaxcala Valley, including spectacular vistas of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, two of Mexico's most iconic volcanoes.

3. Visit the Site Museum. To better understand the civilization that flourished here, stop by the Site Museum, where thousands of clay figurines are on display. Many depict pregnant women and scenes of childbirth, offering fascinating insight into the site's enduring connection to fertility and motherhood.

Visiting hours and admission 

The Xochitécatl Archaeological Zone is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is approximately MXN 105 for Mexican nationals and around MXN 210 for international visitors.
