Oaxaca is the ultimate vacation hotspot, offering a wide range of activities. However, visiting during the Guelaguetza month provides a unique experience.

This season is truly enchanting; the streets come alive with vibrant colors and music fills the air at all hours. Furthermore, along the iconic Corredor de Santo Domingo, you can often witness the renowned calendas—processions featuring crowds carrying balloons and grand figures that are symbolic of this festive celebration.

They represent the spirit of sharing and are named after the mayordomías, which have long been a part of Oaxaca's history. Since ancient times, these groups have convened in designated areas to provide food and products sourced from their surroundings.

If you're looking to enjoy the Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, don't miss El Cerro del Fortin. This location has become the focal point of the celebrations, as various communities come together to showcase their traditions and perform a variety of regional dances.

One of the most iconic dances is the Flor de Piña, showcased by the people of San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec. This dance is unique as the performers hold one of the plentiful fruits that thrive in the region.

Even though this festival is about a century old, its roots can be traced back to pre-Hispanic times. It emerged from the exchange between communities that sought to honor ancient deities.

Over the years, the celebration evolved, and in New Spain, it was scheduled for Mondays following July 16, the day dedicated to Virgin del Carmen, who became the state's protector.

One of our key recommendations is to secure your accommodations in advance. We suggest booking through the Camino Real website or app, where you will find a room at Quinta Real Oaxaca, situated in the vibrant heart of the city.
