The story behind the Broken Christ (Cristo Roto) Sanctuary

The Broken Christ Sanctuary was inaugurated in 2006 as a tribute to the residents of the original town of San José de Gracia, who were forced to relocate after the construction of the dam flooded their community. Crafted from steel and concrete and set atop a three-meter pedestal, the monument reaches a total height of 92 feet (28 meters). Its design was inspired by a novel written by Jesuit priest Ramon Cue Romano.

Its symbolism is deeply moving. The incomplete Christ represents all those who have been forgotten, marginalized, or left behind. At the base of the sculpture, a plaque bears a poignant inscription that resonates with visitors:

"Leave me broken... so that when you see me this way, you remember your brothers and sisters who, like me, are broken, crushed, destitute, oppressed, sick, or disabled".

Today, the sanctuary has evolved beyond a place of worship into one of Aguascalientes' most distinctive cultural and tourism landmarks, attracting travelers seeking a more meaningful connection with the destination.
