Chapultepec Lake

Chapultepec Zoo

Officially the Zoológico de Chapultepec Alfonso L. Herrera, this is one of Latin America’s oldest zoos, opening in 1924.

Its mission is conservation and education, and it’s home to an incredible variety of species—from big cats like lions and tigers to elephants, giraffes, hippos, bears, chimpanzees, and gorillas. Bird lovers will also find parrots, eagles, flamingos, and peacocks, among many others.

Botanical Garden

Covering about 12 hectares, the Chapultepec Botanical Garden features an extensive collection of native and exotic plants. Its goal is conservation, exhibition, and research.

You’ll find themed sections dedicated to cacti, succulents, tropical plants, orchids, aquatic species, and even vegetation from pre-Hispanic times. There are also greenhouses, ponds, and educational spaces perfect for nature lovers.

Xochipilli Fountain

Located in the park’s Second Section, this fountain pays tribute to Xochipilli, the Aztec god of beauty, dance, and flowers. Designed by Mexican sculptor Enrique Alciati, it was inaugurated in 1966 during the International Spring Festival.

It’s a popular meeting spot and a beautiful example of pre-Hispanic-inspired art.

Papalote Children’s Museum

Opened in 1993, this interactive museum is all about hands-on learning through science, technology, art, culture, and the environment—perfect for families with kids.

Monument to the Niños Héroes

Also called the Altar a la Patria, this monument sits atop Chapultepec Hill and honors six young cadets who died defending the castle during the U.S. invasion of 1847.

Every September 13th, a ceremony commemorates their sacrifice—a powerful symbol of Mexican history and patriotism.
