The “Gustavo Vaquera Contreras” Zacatecas International Folklore Festival is a vibrant dance-driven experience dedicated to preserving and celebrating the cultural identity of ethnic communities—not just across Mexico, but around the world.

The origin story of an International Sensation

The festival first took shape in 1996, launched by the state government to commemorate the founding anniversary of Zacatecas City. Just a few years earlier, in 1993, the city’s historic district—now known as the Historic Center of Zacatecas—was recognized by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

What began as a local initiative to promote traditional Mexican folk dance soon grew into something far larger. Over time, international companies and cultural groups from every continent joined in, evolving the event into today’s unparalleled global gathering. Participating ensembles represent all five continents and are affiliated with the CIOFF.

Summer has remained its official home season—when the sunny, high-desert climate invites both residents and travelers to fully explore the city’s heritage, sights, and open-air performances.

When does the festival take place?

Dates for the 2026 festival are still being finalized. The 2025 edition took place from July 27th to August 3rd, featuring dance companies from around the globe, and upcoming dates are expected to fall within a similar seasonal window.

That year, the festival showcased more than 130 cultural and artistic events, spread across 15+ venues, highlighting global diversity through a curated program of pillars and experiences:

  • The People of the World, United by Dance – folkloric and mestizo dance performances
  • Music & Fandango Forum – traditional music and regional jam sessions
  • Atrium Dance Series – ceremonial performances in historic courtyards and plazas
  • Culinary Heritage Showcases – a rich mosaic of traditional community gastronomy
  • Artisan Market Experiences – handcrafted goods and heritage techniques on display
  • Festival Routes Beyond the City – extended celebrations across nearby municipalities
  • Historic Center Parade – a citywide procession through the cobblestoned heart of Zacatecas
  • National Encounter of Pre-Hispanic Cadera Ball Game – the festival’s traditional athletic tribute
  • Alternative Venue Pop-Ups – artistic takeovers in unexpected cultural hubs across the city

Live shows and immersive experiences appeared at several unconventional locations, including the Galerías Zacatecas Mall, the La Esperanza Train Station, and the ruedo inside the Quinta Real Zacatecas, a stage that regularly hosts major festival performances.
