Every autumn, Puebla bursts into color with the marigold fields of Cholula and Atlixco. In recent years, this Pueblo Mágico has added a monumental tradition of its own: the Festival Internacional Valle de Catrinas, which in 2026 reaches its sixth edition with a theme dedicated to the pre-Hispanic gods.
Quetzalcóatl, Tláloc and Mictlantecuhtli have left the temples of ancient Mexico to take over the streets of Atlixco. This time, they arrive not as deities but as monumental papier-mâché catrinas, greeting visitors among marigolds and Day of the Dead decorations. It is a celebration where Mexican tradition meets imagination.
When is Valle de Catrinas 2026?
The festival runs from October 2 to November 9, 2026, in Atlixco, Puebla. During these weeks, you can stroll through the streets, plazas and public spaces where the sculptures are on display. Admission is completely free: no tickets are needed to admire the figures or follow the route.
How many Catrinas are there in 2026, and what do they represent?
The festival began in 2021 with just five figures and has since expanded to other countries. In 2026, it brings together 27 monumental sculptures: 19 installed in Atlixco and eight in other destinations across Mexico and abroad. All are the work of local Atlixco artists and artisans, and they portray deities from the Mesoamerican worldview tied to life, death and nature. The event aims to preserve Mexican traditions and champion the work of local artisans.
For comparison, the 2025 edition paid tribute to Mexico’s traditional trades, featuring figures such as the Catrina Obrera (the Factory Worker), the Catrín Panadero (the Baker), the Catrina Tejedora (the Weaver), the Tortillera (the Tortilla Maker) and the Bolero (the Shoe Shiner).
Where to see the giant sculptures
The catrinas are spread across the town throughout the Day of the Dead season, in spots such as the Zócalo, the Parque de los Arcos and the Cerro de San Miguel. Your appreciation starts at ground level: each figure is surrounded by marigolds or purple velvet flowers, a fixture on nearly every home altar, so the sculptures seem to grow right out of the blooms.

Route tip: start at the Palacio Municipal, where an interactive map helps you locate each sculpture. Take a moment to admire its facade, which resembles alfeñique (traditional sugar paste), then follow the full route, making time to sample the local cuisine along the way.
More to see and do in Atlixco
Atlixco is also famous for its Villa Iluminada Christmas display and its proximity to the Popocatépetl volcano. In autumn, its marigold fields are among the most photographed scenes in Puebla.
Where to stay when visiting Valle de Catrinas

From Camino Real Angelópolis, Atlixco is just over half an hour by car, close to the exit out of Puebla City, making it an ideal base for exploring neighboring towns. Its restaurant, La Huerta, and its bar, Blue Bar, round out a stay that reflects the excellent service Grupo Camino Real is known for.
Quinta Real Puebla., in the heart of the city, is also just minutes from the route and lets you experience the color of Day of the Dead in Puebla’s capital.
