Oaxaca is getting ready for its historic Noche de Rabanos (Night of the Radishes)a beloved local celebration that brings the community together to honor its roots and keep one of the state’s most cherished traditions alive.

Each year, the Noche de Rabanos is full of surprises. It’s a uniquely Mexican event not to be missed—especially when it takes place in a destination as captivating as Oaxaca.

The History Behind the Noche de Rabanos (Night of the Radishes)

Also known as the Noche de Rabanos, this tradition is an annual competition held every December 23 in Oaxaca’s Plaza de la Constitución.

Visitors can admire elaborate displays—mostly with Christmas themes—crafted from radishes, flowers, and corn husks, alongside exhibitions, live music, and, of course, outstanding local cuisine.

The event showcases the creativity of local farmers, florists, artisans, and participants, who design intricate scenes using radishes, everlasting flowers, and totomoxtle (dried corn husks).

The Night of the Radishes originated at the Christmas Eve Market, traditionally held on December 23. Its first official edition took place in 1897, during the administration of Oaxaca’s mayor at the time, Francisco Vasconcelos.

Originally conceived to promote floriculture and horticulture and attract more customers to the market, the event grew into something much greater. Today, it is an integral part of Oaxaca’s cultural identity and one of the most distinctive traditions in Mexico.
