Every August, the Magical Town of Zacatlan, Puebla, hosts one of its most important and tradition-rich events: La Gran Feria de la Manzana (The Great Apple Fair). Here’s everything you need to know and why it’s not to be missed.

Who hasn’t heard of Zacatlan as “Zacatlan de las manzanas” (Zacatlan of the Apples)? The town earned its nickname as one of the country’s top apple producers. According to the Puebla state government, apple cultivation began here in 1575 with the arrival of Franciscan friars.

What is the Great Apple Fair in Zacatlan?

As the name suggests, this fair is dedicated to the apple. Its origins date back 82 years and began as a celebration of the harvest in honor of the Virgin of the Assumption, the patron saint of fruit growers. Each year on August 15, growers dedicate a mass and a procession through the main streets in her honor.

They also bring part of their harvest to be blessed and later sell it. Zacatlan alone records 1,200 producers from 21 communities.

One of the fair’s main attractions is the wide variety of apples and apple-based products, from fresh juices and artisanal ciders to desserts. It’s the perfect opportunity to taste the best local produce.
Over the years, this important fair has transformed into a full-blown festival with cultural, gastronomic, and recreational activities, amusement rides, and concerts by renowned artists. It’s now one of the most popular fairs in Mexico and has gained international recognition, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
