What to do in San Luis Potosí, Mexico's Surrealist Destination?
There is something about San Luis Potosí that captivates the heart. Perhaps it is its picturesque streets, its exquisite gastronomy, the warmth of its people, its climate, or its diverse tourist offerings, but it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the Mexican Republic.

Its Magical Towns
Here, in San Luis Potosí, you will find four Magical Towns that have enchanted both foreigners and locals alike. Xilitla, for instance, was the chosen location by the millionaire, poet, and sculptor Edward James to create a surrealist house and garden, which is visited by hundreds of people each year.

For adventurous tourists, Aquismón is an ideal choice. Waterfalls, rivers, caves, and sinkholes make this Magical Town a fascinating destination for those seeking adrenaline.
Santa María del Río—designated a Magical Town in 2020—is located just 20 minutes from the city of San Luis Potosí. One of its main attractions is the production of rebozos, earning it the title of the Cradle of the Rebozo; its colonial mansions and ancient buildings also contribute to the charm of the place.

The Capital
San Luis Potosí boasts one of the most beautiful Historic Centers in the country, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Here, you can admire its ancient and luxurious mansions, as well as the magnificent temples and parishes that stand out within the city's seven neighborhoods.
If you appreciate surrealist art or wish to explore it, visit the Museo Leonora Carrington located in the Centro de las Artes San Luis Potosí. There, you can find some of the renowned artist's most notable works.
The Historic Center also offers plazas and buildings to explore, such as the Baroque-style Metropolitan Cathedral dating from 1670-1730. Don't miss the twelve apostles sculpted in Carrara marble on the façade and the monumental organ inside.
For a deeper understanding of national history, visit the Government Palace, where its walls narrate historical events that span the entire country but occurred in San Luis Potosí.
If sacred art interests you, be sure to visit the Parroquia del Sagrario, the Parroquia de Loreto, or the Templo del Carmen. In the latter, you can admire the Churrigueresque-style altarpiece known as Los Siete Príncipes.
