Celaya, also known as the Golden Gateway of El Bajío, is a city in the state of Guanajuato that is part of the main urban core of the Laja Bajío Metropolitan Area. It is one of the top destinations for tourists thanks to its traditional cajeta (goat’s milk caramel) sweets and the large number of historic monuments found throughout its streets.

The city of Celaya is renowned for its monasteries and neoclassical architecture, which can be seen in many of its most emblematic buildings. That’s why we’ve put together a list of 5 activities and sites you simply can’t miss in the “Golden Gateway of El Bajío.”

1. Plaza de las Armas

Founded in 1906, this is one of the city’s most representative squares. Its charm lies in the beautiful arcades that surround it and an ornate kiosk at the center, which serves as a social gathering point.

Around the plaza, you’ll find a variety of cultural and community events that showcase the spirit of Celaya.

2. Juárez Park

Juárez Park is one of the most beautiful spots in Celaya for outdoor activities. The park features a lake, picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, and a wide variety of trees and shrubs that make it perfect for connecting with nature and enjoying a relaxing day with family.

Inside the park, you’ll also find a cultural center, a library, and a theater—great opportunities to learn more about the city.

3. San Agustín Temple and Former Convent

Recognized as a historical monument by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), this building is located in the Historic Center of Celaya.

The temple stands out for its Plateresque design with Moorish-inspired details. Inside, different periods of the city’s history are represented. Over time, the building has served as a convent (1610–1638), a prison, a military barracks during the Mexican Revolution, and even a cultural center.

4. Celaya Candy Factory

The Celaya Candy Factory is one of the state’s most popular attractions, offering visitors an interactive experience.

Opening hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Here, you can witness demonstrations of how the candies are made and, of course, buy your favorites at reasonable prices.

5. Cemetery and Mummy Museum

Also known as the “City of the Dead,” this cemetery is one of Celaya’s most emblematic spaces, filled with symbols and spiritual memories.

Founded in the 19th century, it is home to a museum where visitors can see mummified bodies displayed along the walls, with explanations of the preservation process used.
