Located right in the heart of Mexico’s capital, Chapultepec Park (Bosque de Chapultepec) is a can’t-miss destination for both locals and visitors. Spanning over 686 hectares, this massive green space is one of the largest urban parks in the world—a true oasis in the middle of the city.

Things to Do in Chapultepec Park

Chapultepec Castle

One of the park’s most iconic landmarks, Chapultepec Castle houses the National Museum of History. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions that walk you through Mexico’s story—from pre-Hispanic times to the modern day.

Don’t miss the castle’s lookout points, which offer sweeping panoramic views of Mexico City.

National Museum of Anthropology

One of Mexico’s most important museums, this gem is located in the park’s First Section.

Its vast collection spans the history and culture of Mexico’s indigenous peoples, from the Olmec and Maya to the Aztec, Zapotec, and beyond. You’ll find exhibits on Mesoamerican cosmology, ancient art, sculpture, architecture, textiles, and daily life.

The museum also features an ethnobotanical garden, showcasing plants used by indigenous communities for medicine, cooking, and rituals—a fascinating blend of culture and nature.

Chapultepec Lake

Right in the center of the park, Chapultepec Lake is perfect for renting a boat and enjoying a peaceful ride. You might spot floating islands (chinampas) and waterbirds like ducks, geese, and herons.

Surrounding the lake are bike paths, walking trails, and picnic spots for a laid-back afternoon.

Chapultepec Zoo

Officially the Zoológico de Chapultepec Alfonso L. Herrera, this is one of Latin America’s oldest zoos, opening in 1924.

Its mission is conservation and education, and it’s home to an incredible variety of species—from big cats like lions and tigers to elephants, giraffes, hippos, bears, chimpanzees, and gorillas. Bird lovers will also find parrots, eagles, flamingos, and peacocks, among many others.

Botanical Garden

Covering about 12 hectares, the Chapultepec Botanical Garden features an extensive collection of native and exotic plants. Its goal is conservation, exhibition, and research.

You’ll find themed sections dedicated to cacti, succulents, tropical plants, orchids, aquatic species, and even vegetation from pre-Hispanic times. There are also greenhouses, ponds, and educational spaces perfect for nature lovers.

Xochipilli Fountain

Located in the park’s Second Section, this fountain pays tribute to Xochipilli, the Aztec god of beauty, dance, and flowers. Designed by Mexican sculptor Enrique Alciati, it was inaugurated in 1966 during the International Spring Festival.

It’s a popular meeting spot and a beautiful example of pre-Hispanic-inspired art.

Papalote Children’s Museum

Opened in 1993, this interactive museum is all about hands-on learning through science, technology, art, culture, and the environment—perfect for families with kids.

Monument to the Niños Héroes

Also called the Altar a la Patria, this monument sits atop Chapultepec Hill and honors six young cadets who died defending the castle during the U.S. invasion of 1847.

Every September 13th, a ceremony commemorates their sacrifice—a powerful symbol of Mexican history and patriotism.
