Origins and Construction of the Monumental Clock of Pachuca

The idea of building a monumental clock in Pachuca emerged in the late 19th century. By 1904, the project had been approved as a symbol of the city’s progress and modernity. The clock mechanism was commissioned from the British company Gillet & Johnston, renowned for constructing London’s Big Ben. The tower itself was designed by architect Tomás Cordero and built with white quarry stone sourced from the hills surrounding Pachuca.

Standing 40 meters tall, the structure features a neoclassical design. Each of its four faces displays a four-meter-diameter clock dial, and behind each one is a bell that replicates the chime of Big Ben. These bells were imported directly from England and tuned to echo the tone of the iconic London landmark.

Inauguration and Meaning of the Monumental Clock of Pachuca

The Monumental Clock was inaugurated on September 15, 1910, as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence. The ceremony was attended by notable figures of the time, including then-president Porfirio Díaz.

Beyond symbolizing progress and modernity, the clock has become a true emblem of Pachuca and a beloved gathering point for its residents.
